Noosa Food & Wine Festival is an annual 5-day event, this year being held from 16-20 May at a range of venues promoting great food, wine, live music and entertainment in Noosa, Queensland. The region will play host to over 200 chefs, producers, winemakers and journalists with a passion for gourmet food and wine with an estimated 9,000 patrons.
Events and venues include beachfront brunches, restaurant dinners with celebrity chefs, live cooking demonstrations, breweries, hotels, golf courses and outdoor entertainment under the stars, many held either on the beach, in the park, along Hastings Street, or at the Festival Village – the Noosa Lions Park.
Noosa Food & Wine Festival recognises these spaces for their cultural and spiritual significance and heritage from the Kabi-Kabi (or Gubbi Gubbi) Aboriginal people who were the original inhabitants of the Noosa coastline. Inclusion in today’s culture and respect of past are two important values the Noosa Food & Wine Festival team fosters in their organisational principles.
We also recognise the need to adapt for climate change and mitigate tourism’s contribution to greenhouse gas emissions and support Zero Emissions Noosa’s goal of zero net emissions by 2026. The highest risks to this event stem from extreme weather and the impacts they may have on our natural venues and built infrastructure. We at the Noosa Food & Wine Festival aim to work with council and communities in readiness for such events. We also envision the balance between People, Planet and Profit and know that what can be good for the planet is also good for business.
Last year, 2018 Noosa Food & Wine Festival aimed towards a Plastic Free Event, eliminating single use plastic throughout the Festival Village. This year we aim to be completely single-use plastic free in all front of house areas and are working with our vendors to reduce all plastic use where possible in all back of house areas. We understand the requirements for food safety and hygiene that some plastics bring to our supplier food chain and are working towards new initiatives in this space for the future.
We are committed to the development of sustainable tourism and have appointed a Waste Contractor who can benchmark our waste data, service our recycling, refundables and composting options and ensures our waste to landfill is minimised. Noosa Food & Wine Festival work with Waste Warrior volunteers who assist with the education of patrons and partners with these initiatives. This year, we demonstrate how to close the circular economy loop as our compost generated will be returned to the Noosa Trail Network’s reforestation programme.
We encourage our staff to maintain this commitment to environmental responsibility in our daily operations and we seek support from our customers, service providers, business partners, contractors and suppliers to deliver improved environmental outcomes.
Noosa Food & Wine Festival is committed to ensure local and Fairtrade goods and services are purchased where available and encourage our local food suppliers throughout the event. We actively support the Slow Food Noosa’s Snail of Approval accreditation programme as well as the focus on Sustainable Seafood experiences throughout the Festival. Additionally, $1 from every Festival Village ticket purchased will go to Tourism Noosa’s tree rehabilitation programme “Trees for Tourism” in partnership with Noosa & District Landcare.
Noosa Food & Wine Festival is committed to continually improve its environmental and social sustainability performance and will benchmark its energy, water and waste consumption, production and savings annually.
